Confused with what diet is best?

With so many different diets out there it can feel almost impossible to find the right one for your lifestyle. So many ‘influencers’ talking of ‘the best diet for (whatever goal)’ when in reality there is no golden diet, but fundamental nutrition principles that all diets are build upon. We thought that by breaking down these principles it would help some of our followers in their health and wellness journey. And most importantly, to simplify your diet.

Energy expenditure

Whether the goal is to lose or gain weight, they both work on the same principle of energy expenditure. If you want to lose weight you fundamentally have to consume less calories than you expend leaving you in a deficit. Conversely, if you wanted to gain weight you would need to eat more than you expend leaving you in a surplus. You can find more information on the basics of calories in / out here. 

Protein

It is important to consume an adequate amount of protein to help fuel your exercise. Protein has a range of benefits such as being essential in the process of building muscle. Research suggests that to build muscle we need to be in a caloric surplus and eating 1.6-2.2 grams of protein per kg of body weight. In addition, protein is typically more satiating than other nutrients, meaning that you will feel fuller for longer.’
